When I Got The Music......

As i get older i find myself thinking about times gone by, and friends long gone. These floods of memories are often brought out because of music. I can remember certain people, or times in my life simply by hearing a song. Recently i saw Rancid play 2 shows here in Vancouver, both shows were great and as i walked home after the first show i had alot of great memories come to me, all somehow connected to Rancid;

--First time i went to California was early 1992, with my friend Kenny. Man, where is he these days? Haven't seen him in at least 8 or 9 years. We were 18/19 year old punx, with no fear in us at all, so it just made sense to live in his station wagon in the east bay for a few months. It was on this trip that we saw Rancid a bunch of times, at house parties, a sketchy bar in Oakland and at Gilman. The first time i voluntered at Gilman Street was an Econochrist show that Rancid opened (as did Agent 86, the Detonators, and Lumpin Proleteriant). Their sets were so much fun, as was the pre-show drinking at the train yards down the street.

--Over summer 1992 I saw Rancid a few times in Vancouver, Hastings Community Centre and outside in Yaletown (it wasn't a yuppy playground back then). And then around Sept i saw them in Arizona, I was on tour with Megalo and we were lucky to play a show with them. I helped the band sell shirts that night because their roadie was needed on stage. At the end of the night me and Matt Freeman were settling up with the promoter, and after receiving our $100 the promoter gave a stack of bills to Matt, who then turned to me and paid us some more (it was around $200 more i think). I was floored by their generosity! A few days later we had a show in Texas, across town was Rancid. I ran into them at a Jack in the Box and hung out with them for a while, sharing the kind of stories that people on the road share.

--A more recent Rancid related memory would be one night on tour with Modern Life is War, after the show driving our van, someone put on a Rancid CD and instantly our van became a party. All those guys got into punk via Rancid so it was great to hear them all singing along and acting silly.

I may not listen to Rancid on a regular basis anymore but when i do I can't help but smile.
